Excerpt from book...
Day 34 Chicago Illinois to
Valparaiso 78 miles
Part of his account as told by Trekker #280 Guy Smith
"Nobody was excited about our Saturday ride, one that
required a three page triptik to guide us through South
Chicago streets, heavily industrialized neighborhoods, and
the crowded highways of North Indiana. However, the first
15 miles were on busy but delightful Lakeshore Bikeway
which parallels the beaches of Lake Michigan. I rode with
the "Nordy Girls", Karin, Nancy and Terri. They loved to
pose for pictures like the cutesy models of the classy
Nordstrom's Department Stores, we got several good one's
that morning. Terri, normally a very intense rider, was
lagging way behind. As we were passing Shedd Aquarium,
Karin suddenly yelled. "Terri is down". In her mirror,
Karin had seen her friend flying headfirst over the
handlebars and landing on her head in the bike path. I
rushed back to Terri where she lay with a large pool of
blood beginning to form around here mouth and face".

A Review...
"Sunrise 47 is a compilation of journals from several of
the 300 riders on the Transamerica Trek-1989. At first,
the entries, like the group of riders, were disjointed,
lacked continuity and at times even seemed contradictory.
But just as each stroke of a painter's brush reinforces
the previous until the ultimate picture materializes; the
various perspectives, trials, tribulation,
accomplishments, victory, disaster, determination,
compassion, camaraderie and hope. You don't need to
enjoy bicycles to enjoy this book."
